The best way to educate patients on health is to model healthy behaviors by emphasizing nutrition, leading an active lifestyle and practicing wellness. As a medical student, I see many patients struggle with maintaining a healthy weight as a way to manage hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular risk, etc. I understand the struggle. It takes energy and time to eat healthy and live healthy. It’s particularly challenging when we are bombarded with the convenience of unhealthy food choices that are cheap, fast and easy to obtain. Living a healthy lifestyle is particularly challenging for individuals who lack financial resources to do so or people who are caretakers and have many other responsibilities that putting their health first is hard to do. I respect the struggle and hope that by modeling health, we can set an example for others.
